Technology for preparing cylindrical activated carbon from waste tire carbon black

Absrtact
This project is the application study of converting carbon black from waste tire to pillar activated carbon. The study evaluated the feasibility of fabricating high specific surface area pillar activated carbon from the carbon black made from the waste tire pyrolysis, and its ability of VOCs adsorption from industrial exhaust. The project is conducted in order to find a way to dispose waste tire massively and apply the product in the field of VOCs capture in the exhauted gases. The key results of the project is listed as followed: 1. The properties of recycled carbon black is close to that of commercial carbon black except that the ash content is signigicantlly higher (16-18%). With such high content of ash in the recycled carbon black, it is changllengin to make the activated carbon with high specific surface area and enough mechanical strength. 2. The results of the study showed that by proper kneading recipe and process, good control of carbonization and activation process with poper de-ash prtreatment, the pyrolysis carbon black could be turned into pillar active carbon with comparable quality to commercial products. The hardness of the activated carbon could is ≥50N while the specific surface area could reach between 1200-1300m2/g with majority of mesoporous stucture. 3. The tolune adosriton test showed that the prepared activated carbon reached 45% and 30% with saturated concerntaion and 6000ppm toluene repetively at room temperature. It should be noted that 6000ppm is the common VOC concentration standard for exhuast in the semiconductor frabrication. The results met the project target, and suggested that the performance of the activated carbon prepared by the pyrolysis carbon balck is close to commercial products and could be used industirally. Also, the prelimaniary production cost was estimated to be in the range of 38-46 NTD/kg (raw material:80%, utilities: 10%, waste handling fee: 10%, G&A: 5%), showing potential to be commerized. 120 thousands of waster tires are produced annualy in Taiwan, and the current handling ways are still insufficient to dispose them. The market size of activated carbon in Taiwan are 15 thousands tons per year. By converting recycled carbon black from waste tire to activated carbon, potentially diposing waste tire in the sacle of 10 thousand tons/year amd increasing the value of the recycled carbon black is possible. The expected benefit of the technology built in the project is to increase the value of the recycled carbon black by entering the medium-classs activated carbon market and to dispose the dometic waste tire effectively.
